The Truth About Forever

This week I read the fiction book The Truth About Forever written by Sarah Dessan. This book is about a girl named Macy who watches her father die. She doesn't know how to react to the loss and mourn. She begins to life a very free life where she begins to do crazy things. She has a lot of fun but she also faces many challenges. I thought that this was a really good book, it was a lot different then how I thought it was going to be and I think that the characters were really well developed. While reading the book I found myself be able to know the characters. I also think that the plot of the book is really different then many books that I have read. Overall this was a great book that I think a lot of people should try. Some of the books I would like to read over winter break are : Impulse, City of Bones, Beautiful Darkness, No Easy Day, The Perks of Being a Wallflower,

Slice of Life 1

I try not to wince as the buckets try to fit into the next divet. After a few minutes the buckles are the tightest they can be. I stand, attempting to gain my balance, and lean forward. My toes that had been previously cheated, slide away for the end of the book. After aAfter a while my feet began to ache, barely having enough time to get them off, I free my feet. Almost seconds later another pair of boots arrive at my feet ready for me to try them on.

Tracks

This week I read the non-fiction book Tracks written by Robyn Davidson. The book is a first hand account of when she took the journey of walking across the Australian desert. It was a 1,700 mile long walk where she only had a dog and four camels. She faces all of the challenges that come with the desert and then some. It was a really inspiring book where I really got to know the character, who was such a strong person. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I feel like so would many others.'

Beautiful Creatures

This week I read the fiction book Beautiful Creatures written by Garcia Stohl. The book is about a girl named Lena Duchannes who is different from everyone. She struggles to hide her given powers from the outside world and fix a curse. After moving to the small town of Gaitlan, Ethan Wate comes into her life, being first introduced into the world of magic and curses. This book was really good, I first saw the movie, and after reading the book I still think that they are both great, and there are not tons of huge differences between them, other than some details. The author writes it in a way where you get to know the characters in really great detail. Also I think that the plot of the book is a really cool idea. Overall I think that this book was really good and would be great for people who enjoy the mystery fictional type books.
As for a genre or type of book for book groups I think that it would be interesting to do a non-fiction book because I have not done one, and I think that the discussions would be so much different than fiction books. I think also doing a mystery would be interesting.

Poetry blog

The one that smiles back

Blank faces
staring at traffic lights

Feet shuffle on
the corners of streets

Too many faces
with unspoken stories

This poem is for
the one that smiles back

This week I finally read Speak written by Laurie Halse Anderson. This book is about a girl who gets socially rejected after calling the cops at a party, however she would not tell any one why. She tries to go back to school and go back to her normal life where she can focus on art, but her friend keeps pushing her to do things to become popular. Eventually her secret comes out. I thought that this book was pretty good, I did not know how I was going to feel about it originally but as I read more I started to like it more. The type of books that I like are mostly fiction and some non fiction type books.

She has a close bond with really only her adoptive parents. After a sudden tragedy, her entire life is changed and a new girl named Mai comes into her life. This book was really good. Son by Lois Lowry

This week I read the fiction book Son written by Lois Lowry. After a girl named Claire washes ashore without the familiar feeling of her child in her stomach, she sets on a quest to find her child. I really liked this book, I thought it had a lot of details included that not all books have which I thought was really cool. I would recommend this book to everyone in the class, but especially Sofie. I think that she would enjoy this book because after reading some of her blogs she seems to like books like this. Overall I think this was a really good book that I think anyone should read.

The Host

This week I read The Host written by Stephanie Meyer. This book is about a girl who lives in a world were aliens have taken over. She has an alien taking over her body, and they are fighting to see who can ultimately win. This book is one of my absolute favourites, I had seen the movie and even though they are a little different they are both equally incredible. There was not a clear symbol in this book or something that happened to reoccur throughout the book. Overall I recommend this book and I think anybody who wants to should absolutely read it.

The Absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian Part 2

This week I finished our book group book, The Absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian written by Sherman Alexie. This book starts with a boy named Junior who decides to leave the school on his Indian reservation and go to a school that is considered a rich white kid school, that is outside of the reservation. Throughout the book he deals with a lot of bullying and not knowing where he fits in. The ending of the book was not as satisfying as I would have wanted it to be but I still thought that it was a overall good book. I really like the idea of it and there was a lot of present themes that showed throughout the book. I think that this is a good book groups book because it has a lot of great things that can be discussed and I think that it is in general a good book group type book. Overall I think that this is a great book that many people would enjoying no matter what types of books they like to read.

After being born with medical problems, being bullied, and wanting a better education he leaves the school at his reservation to go to a rich white school. He has to deal with being different from everyone else and not having a safe place to go. So far I really like this book, I really like the concept and theme of it. It is really detailed and the characters in the book are described in a way that you can really feel what the characters are feeling and experiencing. Overall I really like this book so far and I would for sure recommend it.

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

This week I read Catch-22 written by Joseph Heller. Catch-22 is set during World War 2. The main character, Yossarian, is in Italy for the war. In the book he must make the decision whether or not to stay and fight in the war with thousands of people trying to kill him, or surrender his position. This book was an incredible read. It was so well written and detailed and really funny book. It was also a really interesting read and I was consistently wanting to read more of it. I really liked how the author wrote about the character. He used a lot of detail and I feel like I almost got to know him and could picture him really well. The author also did the same with the setting each time it would change. Overall throughout this book it was consistently intriguing and I would definitely recommend this to everybody.

Can't Look Away

This week I read Can't Look Away written by Donna Cooner. This fiction book is about a girl who is a youtube phenomenon whose sister dies in a car accident. She thinks that it is her fault and everything begins to fall apart. This book was really good, it had a really interesting plot. The author did a really good job describing each setting in the book. The most descriptive was when she was in her bedroom trying to make her youtube videos, I could really see her room and picture how she was feeling. Overall this was a really good book that I would totally recommend it.

Papertowns by John Green

This week I read Papertowns written by John Green. This book is about a boy named Quentin who for his whole life has lived in the house next to the mysterious girl named Margo Roth Spiegelman. He goes off on adventures with her until she goes missing and he has to follow the clues to find her. I think that the most memorable character in this book was Margo. She was really mysterious and you got to know a lot about her throughout the book. Even though Quentin was staged as the main character, he did not stand out. I thought that this book was really good. It is very similar to most of John Green's other books, so if you do not prefer his type of writing you might not enjoy this, but I think that is a really good book to read no matter what. It had a lot of mystery and I would overall definitely recommend this book.

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

This week I read Wintergirls  written by Laura Halse Anderson. This fiction book was about two girls who were in a competition that ends in a deadly loss. The competition is to see who can be the skinniest, and when one of their lives are taken the other has to recover from the loose and anorexia. The book starts off right in the middle of them making the pact. "I took the knife out of my pocket and cut my palm, just a little."I swear to be the skinniest girl in school, skinnier than you."" This really caught my attention and made me want to learn and read more. This book was really good, but it was a little slow in some parts, as for and content warnings this book is all about anorexia, bulimia, and drugs.

Looking for Alaska By John Green

Over the summer one of the book I read was Looking for Alaska written by John Green. This is a fiction book written about a teenage boy that goes off to boarding school. He meets new friends and one of them being Alaska. There is a lot that happens and it is a really well written story. There is a lot of detail and when reading it I could really picture everything that was happening. I really liked this book, I enjoy reading all of John Greens book and I think that this definitely lived up to the standard that everyone had recommend it to be. This book does talk a lot about drugs and sex. Overall I would recommend this book.
